La Belle Arsène

Montauciel and the Moon is a work in progress by Natalia Frijia. The work explores a story of early aeronautics and the first woman of flight, Elisabet Thible. In her pioneering journey, Thible dressed as the Roman goddess Minerva and sang excerpts from Monsigny’s 1771 comic opera La Belle Arsène as the balloon ascended above Lyon, setting records for both flight and distance along the way. The show explores the little-known story of Thible, and how she disappeared from historical records.

In development, the writer was interested in hearing and using original songs from La Belle Arsène. It was a rather easy task to input the music written for voice, violin, and bassoon, but quite a bit more work to really make the instruments articulate and sound like real players, especially within their historical context. Know that when you hear the piano, that is merely the guide track for the singer.
